Vodka

Disclaimer: this has nothing to do with this year's eurovision song contest.

A couple of days ago my mom asked if I had any clothes for laundry.. this is the conversation that followed:

Me:

"ija, ghandi giex t-shirts ghax mifqughin riha ta sigaretti"

"yes, I have two t-shirts, because they smell like cigarettes"

Mom:

"jaqaw habba fejn tkun is-sibt flaghxija?"

"is it because of the place you go to on Saturday night?"

Me:

"ija, ghax shabi ipejpu u kulhadd idahhan fiha, taf int"

"yep, most of my friends smoke, that's why"

Mom:

"u int x'toqghod taghmel?"

"and what do you do?"

--

I was looking for an answer fast, because the ways it sounds, it implies that I join my friends and smoke too.

Though before I had the chance to reply, my mum broke the silence.

--

Mom:

"tiehu xi drink?"

"you have a drink?"

Me:

"ija mela, xi vodka hux"

"yeah, a vodka or something like that"

Mom:

"VODKA?!?@!#!$"

--

[hell broke loose]

--

Mom:

"dak mhux tajjeb ghalik! jaghmel il-hsara il-sahhtek! M'ghandekx xi tridu, tal-kbar dak"

"that ain't good for you! it's bad for your health! That stuff is not for kids!"

--

[and the preaching went on and on.. I tried to explain but all resulted fruitless]

--

Mom:

"Hu xi koka jew fanta, gej bil-vodka, f'gieh alla"

"You should have a coke or a fanta, for god's sake"

--

Me thinking: ok, so next time I'll go to plush I'll ask for a coke, because mum says so. Can you imagine a 16 year-old guy doing that on a Saturday night? I mean, if I just want a coke, I'll order a coke and that's it, I don't care what others think, but c'mon...

--

At the end, I just had to agree with her because otherwise there wouldn't be an end in sight in the conversation. Then, I wonder why I don't mention anything at home regarding night outs / social stuff. She made a fuss just because I have a drink, I'll wonder what she'll do if I tell her about the fights I see every time I go to pv, or the 13 year old girls barely having any clothes on and flirting with bouncers to get in, jew in-nies hara f'kull kantuniera.

What do you think, should I laugh, or should I cry with desperation?

Ummm...I don't think you should be able to buy drinks (legally speaking) :) But I get your point.

I wish that if I am a mother I will be in touch with teenagers' reality. I will go to PV just to see what's going on there :)

When I was a teenager I would go to "Zona rosa" from time to time (a sort of PV) and I used to think "Oh, if my mum just knew what goes on here and what an angel I am she wouldn't complain at all about certain things when she does complain". It was true though :) I was an angel. Then I grew up LOL :)
hi wen! :) thanks for your comment ;)

hehe, I can buy drinks legally since I'm 16 now. About your last comment.. that's exactly what I think too. I mean, if my mum is aware of what really goes on at such places, she wouldn't have to complain at all about me having a drink.
When mummies find out they're going to have a baby, they go to night classes and learn this sort of thing.

Erm, what I meant was, all mums do this. It's part of their mummy-ness. It means they care for you. ^_^ (Even if you don't like the way they express this ;P )
hi Erica, thanks for your comment! :)

well, they definitely have to keep up with the current "trends".. I mean, what used to take place 16 years ago, doesn't take place today, and vice-versa.
I'm sure they used to drink, get drunk, and all the other stuff 16 years ago as much as they do today...

Argh, the spammers are really after you eh?
hmm, I think you're right on that one.. though mum probably thinks that stuff like this (drunk teenagers, ecc) doesn't exist.

About the spammers.. I'm starting to validate comments from now on, after a quick fix to the code.
