Back in January, I posted a suggestion to my blog readers to start using Google Reader. From some feedback, both through comments and in real life, I got the impression that the post stirred up a bit the RSS feature of blogs.
Since I started using Google's service, I always ended up adding a couple of feeds every now and then, maybe also removing subscriptions to blogs that I don't enjoy reading. But mostly, the list kept on growing and growing. So, naturally, a problem evolved. I have tons of feeds which are of different interests, Maltese Blogs, Coding, Cars, News, whatever.. I have often wondered if it's possible to group feeds into different categories just so that when I take a glimpse at the updated feeds I won't just close the tab because of the mess. Though, I never got into it to look and find if it's possible and how to set it up.
A couple of weeks ago I was at a friend's house, the one that got me hooked on Google Reader (kudos goes to him, I know you're reading this
) and I saw his Google Reader page loaded up. And guess what? His feeds where sorted into categories!
When I got back home, I goofed around the settings for a while, and in a blink of an eye I just found from where to set this feature. So here it goes, if you're like me, you got tons of feeds and you didn't know about this feature and you're interested, here's what you need to do:
On the sidebar on the left (shown in the picture), click the link at the bottom called "Manage Subscriptions". A list of all the feeds you're subscribed to will show up. Now check this out, on the right side of each feed you have a selection box, with "Add to Folder.." in it. (Google Readers calls our `categories` a folder). Click it, and if you don't have any folders set up, select "New Folder..." and a small input box will ask you for the name of the folder.
Really it's that easy. Give it a couple of minutes to fiddle with it, and you'll set it up alright!
If you need any help just leave me a comment, and I'll get back to you ![]()
