Essay

A few weeks ago we had a test during one of my English lectures. We had to choose from five essay titles, and write around 400 words.. The titles weren't much to my liking so I had to improvise by choosing " 'We are all slaves of fashions' Discuss.". Furthermore, I wasn't in the mood of actually writing 400 words about something that barely interests me, so it ain't one of my best writings.. But anyway, here's what I wrote:

----

In today's world, which is fueled by consumerism, it is very likely that most of us are indeed slaves of fashion but I don't think it's fair to say that every single person is. Fashion is an art, which initially, is, supposed to help us express ourselves through the way we look or behave. Unfortunately most of us have got overboard and instead of fashion working for us, we are enslaved by the latest trend.

Those of us who are slaves of fashion would argue that one of the main reasons that they want to keep up with the trend is that they don't want to look worse than others. They want to be the best, the ones that get looked at while walking down the street. I guess this gives them a sense of superiority over others. As if the designer clothes, the expensive accessories and the make-up makes you a batter person than you actually are. This is a fundamental mistake of fashion. Fashion is there to help you express what you are truly from the inside. But the so-called "slaves of fashion" changed this definition to "the latest trends which you can buy with the largest amount of money". I think that these people suffer from a sense of inferiority.

Then there is another group of people who are in the minority that don't give a damn how they look and how they are judged by others for trying not to look mediocre. These people ought to be respected for going against the flow, after all they are just as much persons as others are.

Fashion is not a question of being able to afford something or not. It's a question of doing everything possibly to buy the most expensive products. It is such an unfortunate thing that in today's day and age we have lost the true meaning of the word "fashion".

----

Comment by lecturer: "Good - but some ideas could have been developed futher. 7/10".

That's exactly what I thought when I left the classroom.

"Then there is another group of people who are in the minority that don't give a damn how they look and how they are judged by others for trying not to look mediocre. These people ought to be respected for going against the flow, after all they are just as much persons as others are."

The story of my life.
You did not write "don't give a damn" in an english essay! XD You are so cool! XD *dies giggling*

I liked your take on it... I wouldn't have developed it that way. ^_^
hi Sandro! hehe being such a person is kinda cool. I don't have the guts to be like that, even though to a certain extent I don't want to be like others.

hi Erica :) lol I use that frequently, after all, the lecturer also uses it during lectures.. so why shouldn't I? I haven't done so during exams though... Hehe I wish I had more time to think about it, but it's not that bad, so...
Hello Jean Paul,

izjed kemm nahdem bl-RSS izjed qed narah tan-nejk.

Dahhalt il-blogs kollha fl-RSS tieghi imma meta l-RSS jupdatja, il-bloggata tkun ilha li saret zmien.

Inti li inti espert ta' l-RSS hemm xi mod kif nigi nfurmat mill-ewwel li blog giet updated?

U din is-sistema nistghu nghadduha lil kulhadd halli kulhadd ikollu sistema fair?

Sandro
Interesting essay Ninuhadida. I agree with your definition of fashion. I believe as well that the way we look is very important mostly because the way we look is connected to the way we feel. I think it is a matter of self estime. To keep up with trends is not essential but one wouldn't feel comfortable wearing, I don't know, a dress that was fashionable in the 50's, or the hippy sytle of the 70's. Well, there are people who would, but in practical terms, who would hire someone who looks like "That 70's show"? :) I get your point that some people are only too interested in fashion just because of sheer pressure. That's absurd, especially when one can barely afford it... I don't know, just thinking aloud.
aw Sandro,

hehe ifhem ghalija mhux tan nejk ghax kieku ma jkunx hu, insa li ha noqghod indur blog blog biex nara hux updated.

x'RSS reader qed tuza? jien nuza il Google Reader u madwar nofsija wara li tkun saret il bloggata jigi updated. Iccekja wahda is settings tar reader tieghek, forsi jista jiccekja iktar frekwentament jekk sarets blog ohra jew le.

l ahhar kumment ma fhimtux. x'igifiri nghadduha il kulhadd halli kulhadd ikollu sistema fair?
Hehe, well yes I agree with you about the point of wearing a dress from the 50s or 70s.. In my essay I wasn't specifically referring to those type of people, more like people who wouldn't mine wearing a t-shirt which has a small stain or something like that.. Wearing stuff you mentioned is kinda the other extreme ;p
