Cleaning Up

posted on September 1st, 2008

I got back to Naxxar last Sunday and since I still have 4 weeks of doing next to nothing (or whatever I am pleased to do) I decided it was time to clean up my room for good.. My room actually looks like it's always clean.. however when you take a look at the drawers and inside furniture.. the real mess shows up. Cables from old computers, DC adapters of devices that don't work anymore, printers, whatever you can think that it has relation to electronics/computers I have.

So today I pulled out all the stuff from the furniture and started sorting.. first into two categories: *might be able to sell* and *trash* stuff.. I took a list of all the *might be able to sell* stuff, and believe me there's lot of crap. Now I'll have to think whether I'll try and sell it on ebay or not. I've never sold anything on the net (though I do buy a lot), and I'm venturing into unknown territory.. Especially with ebay, because if I screw up, I get a negative vote which screws up my reputation. Two things that are on my mind; how to be able to predict shipping costs to whatever country to ship to and will I be able to make a profit? I mean, would it be really worth the while. Because if I'm only going to get a couple of euros, I'm gonna trash the stuff.

The other category, *trash*, I took apart and sorted further into metals/plastics so that I can recycle them.. the other stuff that I'm not going to dare and open, are going to electronic waste, like printers.. I opened up a printer once, it was an inkjet, and believe me, the mess I ended up with was unbelievable.. ink on the floor, on my arm, on my shirt, every single thing that came in contact with it, was screwed. From that point on, no more opening printers. Not just the mess, it's way complicated.. too many plastic components, and I only managed to salvage two electric motors so it's definitely not worth while doing it again.

When I was taking a break, I was looking at this stuff at bird's eye view. I started wondering why on earth I bought all this crap in the first place. Most of things, ok, either broke down or came with other products, like usb cables with cameras, telephone lines with modems, etc. However there is stuff that I bought and just used for a couple of days. The wise, they say, learns from his mistakes. So when browsing for new products, next time around I'll try to be wise and buy only if I really need it.

Next clean up operation: clothes. Losing weight is not fun, every item that is over 1 year old is a give away. However the worst part is that I have to shop for new clothes :P And I don't like to shop for clothes here in Malta.. if you ask to try something on.. it's like you're implying that you want to buy. And then I have to shrug off every attemp to make me buy it. Ugh.

Haha. Kemm iddiskrivejtha tajjeb :) Hehhe, gratli lili wkoll li hadt xi battikata biex inzarma xi haga, biex ma rnexxieli nsalva kwazi xejn!

Tal-hwejjeg ma naqbilx mieghek. Ma timplika xejn billi tippruvahom. Jien meta mmur nixtri xi haga, dejjem indur xi erba' hwienet qabel ma nfattarha, ghax jekk le, imbaghad tghaddi minn fejn xi vetrina bil-borza f'idek qisek l-iblah u tara 'l dak li ghandek fil-borza b'nofs il-prezz li tkun hallast int!

Aw dward, kif ahna xbin? :) Grazzi tal-kumment.

Fuq tal-hwejjeg.. ovjament, ma jfissirx li ghandi naqbad u nixtri, izda hawn Malta, meta nidhol go hanut inhosni sfurzat biex nixtri u trid tiggieled ma tal-hanut biex tfhemu li qed tiprova biss u mhux behsiebek taqbad u tixtri.

Dawk il-fonts bil-Malti ghadni ma ghamilthomx..
U le m'inix qed nghagglek! Affarik :)
aw dward! :)

tibzax, irrid naghmilha pero. Il-problema hi li biex tiprova tifhem is-sets ta font li jeziztu u kif turihom trid tkisser rasek heh.
You really shouldn't throw away the printers without salvaging the parts. If you pull out the cartridges and any reservoir(s) it shouldn't be such a messy job.

you should be able to find two or three stepper motors inside (these are worth some Lm10 each if you try to buy them individually). The gearing inside these printers can come in quite useful too if you're into robotics etc..

You can also salvage some tiny LEDs and push buttons which are always useful. If you're into some pretty advanced electronics, you can also probably find a use for the printer's processor.
Hey james! :) thanks for your comment! :)

First thing I did was pull out the cartridges, but there was a compartment in the printer with some kinds of "foam" to collect ink that I couldn't remove without making a mess..

I found two stepper motors inside, however when I was looking their serial number up to document my list of things to get rid off, I found them available for $5 new!

And about the leds and push buttons.. well those are easy to pull out because usually they're stuck on the same pcb so I could just pull that out without having to touch anything else!

BTW, by any chance, you're not james attard of madvip.net, aren't you?
nope....different James...James Baldacchino here.

I guess, they're using cheaper components in inkjets nowadays!

:/
hehe well, the printers are Epson C45.. which are cheap by themselves already. piece of crap, guzzles more ink than anything I've never seen before.. which eventually made me change over to a laser printer.
