The most I would have expected today was a "bad" (in other words, boring) day since it started off on the wrong foot. Yesterday I slept really late, since I wasn't tired at all and I felt like listening to some music and think a bit over what's happening these days.. school, projects, friends, ecc ecc.. It wasn't until 1.30am that I drifted off to sleep.. You can imagine how I felt like when the alarm on my mobile started ringing at 6.45pm "It's dawn already? Damn!". Anyway, I got ready for another day at school and in a couple of minutes I was waiting outside for my friend to pick me up and give me a ride to school.
I arrived just in time for my first lecture of the day, an English lecture. As with most of Wednesday mornings, I was half asleep, i.e. constantly yawning and barely able to keep my eyes open. However, that was only until the lecturer arrived. He always begins with the attendance in his excellent English tone.
Today we were *supposed* to read a text from our grammar book, and it was about gender equality. But, just as quickly as the lecture started, he soon changed his mind (he's very dynamic in his lectures) and decided to have a group discussion. At first I wasn't really eager about it, especially if he asks me something since at 8:00 in the morning, I don't actually feel like making up my mind to answer an elaborate question.
The discussion started off with gender equality. (I hope these "topics" won't create a chaos of agreeing/disagreeing comments, lol) First of all, can female and male be equal? Depends on what we're bases talking.. for example, female and male should definitively be equal in dignity, respect, honor, ecc. But are the minds equal? Does a woman think in the same way as a man? Those who expressed their opinions mentioned for instance that women are more caring than men.. which I truly believe. Regarding jobs -- can a woman perform the same type of job a man can? Again, it depends what type of job -- for example, a woman is just as a teacher/writer/accountant/programmer/ecc as a man is. However, can a woman perform the job of a carpenter or a blacksmith? Well maybe some women can, but it's more common to have men working in these kind of jobs..
Another topic we talked about is "gurus" in Malta.. our lecturer mentioned two "famous" personalities amongst the Maltese -- Peppi Azzoppardi and Emmy Bezzina.. He mentioned how a person such as Peppi can give time on his famous tv show, Xarabank, to people whom, because they are popular can talk about some delicate subject, which they're not experts in, again -- just because they are popular. Then, our lecturer mentioned that once he was listening to a radio show by this presenter and it was about whether gay couples should be allowed to adopt children and bring them up on their own. Our lecturer told us why (I don't remember exactly the words) that a child need both his mother and father to be brought up and form his "character". I personally believe that a child should be brought up by a father and mother, (or male and female if the child is adopted) for the sole reason that nature created us "male" and "female" and we are complementary to each other.
And then, about Emmy Bezzina, another person, who is "popular" amongst Maltese, but in my definition is a person who thinks he's some kind of "reformer" and someone whom he thinks he is special.. Anyway, this guy apparently is saying that the few cells that are made up after conception are part of the woman's body, therefore since it's her own body, she can do whatever she wants and it's OK to perform an abortion. Our lecturer started mentioning that from conception to birth there is a continuous process, in which, if it is interrupted or halted, there will be no birth. And what "impressed" me most was when he mentioned that these people (who believe abortion is a right) are forgetting that for them to be talking about that abortion is right, their process from which they were created, from the few cells to the birth, wasn't interrupted/halted.
Overall, I think it was the most interesting lecture I've had since I started school at JC.. Another thing that I really liked was that he delivered all his "believes" (and my believes also) without mentioning any Catholic church or religion, since in Malta we have a tendency to introduce the church in every "hot topic" like I mentioned today. He finished off the lecture by saying that we should be aware of what others are saying and we shouldn't swallow everything we hear.. and just because something is said by many people, it doesn't mean it's a good thing.
Gotta leave, it's 12.15am and I can already imagine what I'm going to have to go through to wake up tomorrow.. that's why I like Summer.. I can stay up really late! As a side note; I wish I can explain myself better and to have more time so that I can elaborate more.. heh.
